Respect Surf Etiquette: Follow basic surf etiquette to avoid conflicts and ensure safety. Yield the right of way to the surfer closest to the wave’s peak, avoid “dropping in” (cutting in front of another surfer), and respect the lineup.

Check Your Surroundings: Be aware of other surfers, swimmers, and obstacles. Keep a safe distance from others to avoid collisions, and always look before taking off on a wave.

Understand the Environment: Know the local conditions, including currents, tides, and any potential hazards like rocks or coral. Always surf in areas appropriate for your experience level and avoid unfamiliar spots without local guidance.

Equipment Care:

Secure Your Leash: Always wear your leash to keep your board close and avoid injuring others. Check it regularly for wear and tear to ensure it doesn’t break in the water.

Use Wax or Traction Pads: Ensure your board is waxed (or has a traction pad) to prevent slipping. Apply wax before every session, focusing on areas where your feet and hands will be.

Inspect Your Board: Check your board for dings, cracks, or other damage before hitting the water. Even small cracks can lead to water damage, which can ruin the board’s buoyancy.

Body Position and Technique:

Position on the Board: Find the “sweet spot” on your board; lying too far forward can cause the nose to dip, while too far back will slow you down. A balanced position will improve paddling and wave-catching.

Stay Relaxed: Stay calm and relaxed, especially if you wipe out. Don’t panic if you’re held underwater; remain calm, and you’ll resurface shortly. Protect your head with your arms if you’re in turbulent waves.
